Engadget Says .... one paragraph's worth containing a blurb about the series 3 gleaned from Thomas Hawk's blog (http://thomashawk.com/2006/02/lunching-with-tivos-e-stephen-mack.html) from the other day about his and Davis Freeberg's lunch with Tivo's Director of Service and Operations E. Stephen Mack last week.
.... of course Engadget included the prerequisite references to "bad news" and adding the line "fans may begin jumping ship", just for good measure.
I'll refrain from adding my line about "All Tivo News is...". Seems I upset a few folks last time I did that.

It can't be bad news for TiVo; it doesn't qualify as news at all.

On the surface, you're right in the sense that the article seems to be about something NOT happening. News is usually not about a lack of an event. However this article is not about a non event. It's about a lunch with an informed source - who is confirming what we all suspected. Tivo is 3 years behind the times.
Further, a careful reading reveals that there is an actual event (sort of) - the migration of Tivo fans to non-archaic technology. Some statistics would have made the article better.
Anyway, this article is like those stories about the birth of DVD and the death of VHS. It's a story that's more about other DVR technology and it's progressive technology, and only tangentially about Tivo.
That's just my take on why I think it's news. Or at least news-ish.

Wow, cablecard has been out for 3 years!

careful reading nothing - engadget is just having fun with a potshot at TiVo for not having a dual tuner HD DVR out yet. We can all hash out cablecard etc.. again but why.
and yes some statistics would make this more relevant - easy to say people are moving oin to an HD solution -
but how many
what are they migrating to
and will they migrate back to an S3

Tivo is 3 years behind the times.
TiVo is 3 years behind itself; the rest of the world is 14 months behind TiVo.
True but remember the rule
"No news is bad news for TiVo"
Ouch! How could I forget that when the biggest story of the week is the VP spending several hours NOT telling anyone he shot somebody - which IS bad for TiVo.

Of course not.
It's not Marketed as that.
It's "Digital Cable Ready".
While I'll grant very few have any idea what that is, I would figure it's slightly more.

Question,
Lots of people say how great on-demand is. It seems pretty lousy on my Adelphia 6012, so I gave up on it. I don't have any pay channels anyway, but I have wondered this:
Is On-Demand in Hi-Def on anyone's system? If not, why the heck does anyone watch it?

And as usual ...
This has gone from ...While Stephen was not able to disclose any information on Series 3 shipping dates (the product is currently believed to be in outside beta testing, which was not denied), he added that they will release it “when it is ready.”

The good news is that it's apparently undergoing a private beta, at least according to a non-denial from TiVo Director of Service Operations E. Stephen Mack.

To be clear:
I didn't say anything to Thomas about this! I cannot confirm or deny that the Series3 is or is not in private beta testing.
EDIT: I posted comments in the Engadget article and the Daily Tech article to clarify things.

Stephen's post on DailyTech:
"Folks, this is now a game of telephone. You're quoting Engadget who is quoting Thomas Hawk from an article about a lunch he had with me on Monday. I did not say anything to Thomas about the status of the Series3 unit. I cannot confirm or deny whether or not the Series3 is or is not in beta testing.
"I did say that, "It will be released when it's ready." But that doesn't give you any kind of date.
"I realize folks are hungry for news, but I didn't provide any on Monday. Please don't invent news. "
Darn right we're hungry for news, Stephen. My HDTV is sad without an S3. All it gets to do is show SD. It's waiting impatiently for some hardcore HD Tivo lovin'. :)

I don't see Stephen's reply on engadget, but it's in the dailytech. Lots of research they did on Tahiti!! Man, that was last year's release on HME stuff released already!!

What the heck is "private beta testing" anyway? :o
Can you confirm that the beta testing is on double secret probation?

Look, its all just a little misunderstanding. Its the TGC S3, and its in PRIVACY beta testing to make sure your personally identifiable information can be viewed freely by the Chinese government.

That certain trusted people (primarily TiVo employees that matter, like Stephen, Bob, Jerry, Jon, Tom) are initially getting the first beta boxes, befor a general beta.

Hey, you can't win the lottery if you don't buy a ticket.
Similarly, for all of our beta programs -- present, future, whatever -- it can't hurt to make sure your beta application is updated. And if you don't have an application, you definitely can't be picked, no matter what it is that you're interested in testing.
