View Full Version : HRD10-250 replacement - any way to copy/recover recordings from another unit?
My original HDR10-250 HD-TiVo died recently, and DirecTV just shipped me a replacement. However, I have a couple of recordings on the original that I really need to hang on to, if at all possible (commercials that my wife was in).
I still have my old unit for a short time - what options do I have for preserving these recordings? I am familiar with linux, and have done various TiVo hacks on my old S1 TiVo, so I'm not completely unfamiliar with playing around with these HDs.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Was your HR10-250 hacked to begin with? In any case...I don't think there's any way to do it that we're allowed to discuss here, other than connecting up a VCR or DVD recorder and doing Save to VCR.

How did your original HR10-250 DVR die? If the hard drive died, then there's likely no way to recover those old recordings. But if it's just "sick", you might be able to repair it using SpinRite repair utility.

Use MFS Tools w/Hinsdale. I Copied drives several times and it works great.

Not into a new Tivo it doesn't -- not unless it was hacked/patched. Scrambled recordings won't play in a different unit.

Tivo recordings are encrypted to the Tivo's motherboard ID. You can move hard drives between Tivos with compatible software images, but a "clear and delete everything" is required before that drive will work in the new Tivo. This, of course, wipes out the recordings so they will not be playable on the new Tivo.

By default, Tivo encrypts all recordings with a key that has to match information stored on your tivo’s crypto chip. This “DiskConfiguration" key is also stored in the MFS database of your hard drive. If you move your hard drive to another Tivo with a different crypto chip (on the motherboard), the keys won't match and you won't be able to play the encrypted recordings.
If you have a superpatched hacked Tivo, recordings are no longer encrypted, so they are playable if you move the drive from one Tivo to another. If you move a drive, you also have to reset the key stored in MFS, which is commonly done with 51killer. Otherwise you get the dredded "error 51".
