My internet has been unreliable lately (Mediacom). At least a couple times a day it drops for a few minutes. Mediacom is not helpful since when they come out it's working. Anyway, the TiVo keeps freezing up. It seems like if the internet drops out at the wrong time, especially when doing Netflix stuff, the thing just locks up and has to be rebooted. Anyone else had something like this? I don't imagine there's any way to prevent this?

I just hooked my brand new Klipsch 5.1 surround sound through a new Pioneer vsx-819H Receiver (came free with speakers) and everything seems to be working, except for the bleeps, and bloops when fast forwarding, rewinding, or changing channels. When I'm back at the home page, I hear the sounds just fine. Is this a setting on the Tivo I can change? I set this whole thing up while my wife is out of town as a surprise, and I know that she won't be impressed, but rather bummed because we've lost the sounds!

TiVo Suggestions only records Malcolm in the Middle

I have 2 Series 3 TiVos. About a month ago one of them quit recording TiVo suggestions other than Malcolm in the Middle. I have tried the turn off suggestions, reboot, turn them back on. I have done the thumbs up. I have plenty of room on the hard drive and yet all it will record as a suggestion is Malcolm. I like Malcolm but not a steady diet of him. I have tried searching but find nothing like this on the forum. My other TiVo records suggestions like crazy.

Any help?

It seems like my HD Tivo wireless adapter works OK. It doesn't drop out Netflix too much, and gets HD.
When I hook up the ethernet cable insetad, Netflix keeps dropping out, and will NOT get an HD signal.
Have checked the cable and the router, they are fine.
As soon as I connect wireless again, I get HD with no dropouts. Any idea what could be wrong.
When it is on ethernet, I get many lockups and have to unplug and restart the machine. Doesn't happen on wireless.
Software version is the most up to date, per the Tivo web site.
Thanks for any help.

apparent decoder errors = symptom of what? Expander failure, or?

I have an 11-month-old TiVoHD whth my DVR Expander, and watch almost exclusively HD. Recently I've seen 2 odd things:

1) occasionally quick motion (well, relatively quick motion, like someone turning around in a Law & Order episode). causes pixelation for a second or two

2) Sometimes when a show is recorded there are a lot of clicks in the audio.

Having worked on video consumer electronics, I can see these are decoder issues, but I would doubt that's the primary cause. it's easy to blame the expander, but this would be the worst time to blindly upgrade because if it's NOT the expander, I've voided my warranty. I could disconnect the expander for a week and see if it goes away, but I'd prefer not to dump my programs and reduce my capacity if I can avoid it. So I was wondering if

a) people who subsequently experienced DVR Expander failures had these symptoms early on

b) anyone's seen these symptoms in other contexts

thanks!
/j

ps - I know some of you feel the answer to anyone who has -any- issues with the expander connected is "dump the expander, get an internal drive, and you'll be happy", and I understand and respect this point of view, but postings to that effect won't really help me today - thanks for understanding 8-}

Hi-

Just got a new TiVo XL, one M card.

On several stations tonight, glitches every 5 minutes... pixelization and audio dropouts.

This happened a year ago when I tried HD, I truly thought it would be fixed by now.

I have excellent signal... what the heck is causing this, and is there anything I can do?

Thanks!

Design of cable cards

Would someone tell me about the design of cable cards? Specifically, is there a coax cable from the cable jack (from the cable company) that must connect to the cable card on one end, while the other end is plugged into a Series 3 type TiVo machine? I can't get a knowledgeable CSR with Charter Communications to answer the question. (The phone reps have never seen a cable card - only the technicians who don't answer calls).

If a coax cable does indeed connect to a cable card, does a dual cable card require two cables as would separate cable cards?

Finally, does anyone know for certain if Charter requires the use of a tuning adapter with its cable cards, and if so, does it use a coax cable too/alone/at all? I wish I knew what that looked like. Does one tuning adapter operate both cable cards or must there be separate tuning adapters? Are there any pics of cable cards and/or tuning adapters somewhere in this Forum that I might be able to see what these contraptions look like? Do cable operators have a separate monthly fee for "renting/leasing" tuning adapters?

Thanks in advance.

TiVoHD Internal 1TB and External 1TB marriage

Hello everyone,

I just purchased a 1TB internal hard drive from Weaknees (my original 160GB hard drive failed) and and I also have an External WD TiVo Verified drive. The external worked fine on the origianl drive and in another TiVoHD I have, but it will not marry on the TiVoHD with the new internal 1TB hard drive installed. It is recognized in the TiVoHD setup and asks to setup and reboot, but I still have the same amount of recording hours after it reboots. (157 HD hours and 1367 SD hours)
Does anyone know the special process I would need to go through to marry the two drives?

Thanks in advance! :)

Partial Recordings / Stuttering on TivoHD

We have a 6 month old Tivo HD that only has OTA antenna.

Over the last 7 days we have noticed that daytime (mostly) shows have been partially recorded. The duration of a 60 min show ends up being between 4-41 minutes.

Also, many shows are "stuttering" during playback. This is not a signal strength issue, (90-99 % strength) since there is no pixelation. The A/V just pauses for a couple seconds, then starts again. It usually lasts about 2-5 mins. This happens on shows that are both partially AND fully recorded.

I have no idea what has changed. I've tried rebooting, and it did a partial recording 2 hours later.

Netflix, Ripped DVD, etc NEVER have this issue. It's only the OTA channels.

Thanks,
George

S3 with "My DVR Expander" has Fail 7 error. Is it internal or external?

I have a stock early-adopter S3 Tivo, and last year I added an official external 500GB WD "My DVR Extender" to the unit just before the Olympics.

This week, my S3 started locking up and showing pixellation, so I ran the kickstart diagnostics which reported a Fail 7 error.

How can I tell if the internal drive or the external drive is failing? Don't the drives get married at setup time and show up as one big virtual drive? And what happens if I power down and then unplug the external drive? Will it become permanently unmarried from the S3?

I've already ordered a replacement 1TB internal drive for the TIVO from Amazon, but now I'm wondering if it might be the extender drive that's failing.
